Emerging research suggests drinking alcohol to fall asleep may ultimately be counterproductive as the drug interferes with sleep homeostasis, the body’s sleep-regulating mechanism.

Researchers from the University of Missouri School of Medicine believe that over time, the impairment in normal sleep function can result in insomnia.
