When someone is living with both a diagnosed mental health disorder and an ongoing problem with substance abuse, they have what is called a dual diagnosis. Because both disorders require medical and psychotherapeutic intervention in order for the patient to manage the symptoms of both problems, it is recommended that they undergo dual diagnosis treatment rather than attempt to treat the disorders separately.
