Fat Camps for Women: What Makes Wellspring Different
The term ‘fat camp' is heard a lot in popular culture today. The term carries with it a host of negative connotations, and for good reason. In the traditional sense of the term, ‘fat camps' are places where kids are sent against their will to exercise for hours on end, eat terrible food, go to bed hungry, and return home only to regain all of the weight they lost at camp.
With that definition in mind, Wellspring New York is absolutely not a fat camp.. Here are some key differences that we hope you will keep in mind when making the very important decision of choosing a weight loss solution.
Fat Camps are NOT Scientifically Based
Wellspring New York was developed by the world's leading researchers as the most fun and effective weight loss camp for young women. In fact, Wellspring New York is the only weight loss program of its kind exclusively for girls and young women. Every facet of the Wellspring Plan is designed around medically-sound and scientifically-proven techniques for long-term weight loss.
At fat camps, girls and young women lose weight quickly, but in ways that may or may not be safe and effective. And the long-term weight loss results of fat camps are never studied and presented at leading obesity research conferences. In contrast, Wellspring's results are presented yearly at medical conferences and in peer-reviewed research journals. The Wellspring Plan lives up to the scrutiny of scientific study, which is not true for the weight loss results of fat camps.
Fat Camps Do NOT Promote Long-Term Weight Loss
Many of the girls and women who attend Wellspring New York have tried to lose weight before. Many have attended traditional fat camps for women, hired personal trainers, and tried a variety of fad diets. But the result is almost always the same—after an initial weight loss, the weight is quickly regained. This is particularly true for the girls and young women who attend fat camps, as they return home entirely unprepared for handling continued weight loss on their own.
In contrast, Wellspring New York prepares girls and young women for a lifetime of continued weight loss. We teach skill sets designed to prepare participants for the specific challenges they'll face at home, including how to choose, order and cook food that is Wellspring-friendly.
We even include a Continuing Care Program in the cost of tuition, extending each participant's weight loss program through June 1, 2012. And if a participant successfully completes the first 3 months of the Continuing Care Program, she will receive a $700 Continuing Care Award from Wellspring.
In addition, we train each camper's family on how best to support their child's continued weight loss at home. Free Family Workshops offered on summer weekends train families how to follow the program that their daughter has been following all summer. And if a family sends at least one member to a Family Workshop, we offer a $300 Family Workshop Award. We believe that strongly in importance of long-term weight loss.
Fat Camps are Not Eligible for Insurance Reimbursement
Traditional fat camps have no basis in medical science, and therefore are not eligible for any health insurance reimbursement. In contrast, Wellspring New York participants are often reimbursed a significant portion of their weight loss camp tuition due to the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy component of camp. Each participant receives two individual and two group behavioral therapy sessions per week with a Masters- or Doctoral-level Behavioral Coach, paving the way for long-term weight loss, as well as a significant savings compared to fat camps.
