Healthy Travel Tips

Read some healthy travel tips from Shauna Johnson, a health advisor for Wellspring’s weight loss programs covered by media around the world.

When traveling by car…

  • Stop to eat instead of sitting in the car and going through drive-thru.  Consider Subway or other sandwich shops with healthier options than burger joints.
  • Take a break during long drive and walk around for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Pack a picnic.  That way, you have more control over what you eat (that is, you can make sure it’s healthy), you can pull over whenever you get hungry, it will force you to get out and get fresh air and a little walk in.

When traveling by train…

  • Get up out of the seat, stretch, and walk around.
  • Stretch while in your seat: extend your legs, rotate your feet at your ankles,
  • Bring snacks to avoid eating the typically unhealthy options available in the train.
  • Bring a book!  The train is the perfect place to relax and stimulate the mind.

When traveling by plane…

  • Power walk the airport.  You’ll fit right in with others trying to catch their flights.
  • If you have the time, don’t take the moving sidewalk.  Rather, get the walk in to get the blood flowing.
  • Plan ahead.  Check the menu they’ll be serving online and get a special selection.  Or, bring your own food that you know is healthy, that you know you’ll enjoy (and save yourself some money on overpriced airplane food).
  • Keep caffeine to a minimum.  All tend to dehydrate the body, and it is important to hydrate.  Drink lots of water to stay hydrated which also helps prevent jet lag.
